Is my baby too old for a newborn session?
Is your baby too old for a newborn photoshoot?
The short answer? Nope!
Any age is the perfect age for a session.
Sometimes you don’t feel like having a photoshoot right after giving birth - and that’s ok!
Postpartum is an emotional time, to say the least! Hormones are raging, you’re sore….everywhere…and sleep-deprived to boot. Having your photo taken can be a scary thought. While IF you book a newborn photoshoot within the first 2 weeks of your baby’s life, I promise it’s actually surprisingly easy. We keep things very relaxed and low-stress during a newborn session.
BUT! If for whatever reason you want to wait a couple months before booking a shoot, that’s fine too! Read on for a few benefits of photographing a slightly older baby :)
If you’ve decided to book your photoshoot when baby is a couple months old - here are a few benefits:
Smiles! I mean, come on. Need I say more? Getting to document those first smiles is just the sweetest!
A more predictable schedule. After a month or so, you and your family have found a bit more of a rhythm to your days. Sure, you’re still sleeeeepy (my boys didn’t sleep through the night for AGES!) but the sleep-deprivation is a little less shocking after a month or so.
Your body has healed up a bit more. Stitches, sore nipples, sore everything…the first few weeks are so tough on mama’s body! I remember being so shocked that nobody warned me about how difficult those first few weeks are! You kind of feel like you’ve just been hit by a truck - physically and emotionally. Giving your body some time to heal might be beneficial if you’re feeling super overwhelmed and sore.
We can document your routines. You’ve learned your little one’s personality a bit more after a few weeks. You know they love bathtime, they always falls asleep when you sing a certain lullaby, they have to be swaddled a very particular way…all those super sweet details that you want to bottle up forever. We can document those together!
The most important thing to remember is that you can decide what feels right for your family. If you’re keen for photos straight away, great! If you’d rather wait a couple months, that’s great too!
When it’s time for your session, remember to relax and enjoy it. The whole point of photos is to document to love, the joy, the chaos, and the beauty of your everyday.
If you want to make some timeless images together on film - get in touch! I’d love to document your family’s story.
