The Importance of Personal Work - Black & White 35mm Film
I shot my first roll of black and white film since I was in college - what?! I learned photography in high school, mostly on black and white, in the darkroom. And then my college fundamentals classes were also mostly black and white in the darkroom. I feel like maybe I got a little bit burnt out and needed a break from black & white. ALSO…I know it’s *kind of* cheating but you can always convert a color photo to black and white, right? Well, it doesn’t really hit the same as shooting something FOR black and white. Your brain works differently. You see light in a new way. Light becomes such an important factor in your composition.
I picked up a roll of black and white film on a whim last month and decided to finally shoot it! I chose this black and white roll to document my kids and all the little details that will change in the coming years.
I was so stoked with how these photos of my kids turned out. We were just in our PJs, playing together in the front yard. I wanted to document their ever-changing features. The last of Niko’s baby chub, my favorite freckle of Max’s on his face, my favorite freckle on Cora’s neck (that’s sort of in the shape of a heart). These are the details and moments that I want to remember forever & ever.
Magic, magic, magic!! Black and white is officially back in my heart forever & ever. Shooting a roll of personal work was just what I needed to get inspired in black and white photography.
