What Should You Wear to Your Maternity Session?

Need inspiration on what to wear to your maternity photoshoot? Whether you’re doing a studio session, an in-home maternity shoot, or a beautiful beach shoot…I have some super helpful suggestions for you! Read on to get your Auckland maternity session wardrobe sorted…

One of the biggest questions I get asked as a family, newborn and maternity photographer is “What should we wear?”

Whether you’re having an in-home maternity session, a simple studio vibe, or a beautiful beach session, I’m here to share some great tips and options for what you should wear to your maternity session!

01. Studio Maternity Session

Ohhh, exciting! You’ve booked a studio maternity session! These are usually a great way to document your bump in a beautiful, simplistic way. I love setting up a simple backrop with maybe some soft florals added to the mix.

You can keep things simple with some undies, a wrap-style dress, or a cozy jean and sweater look. The great thing about a studio is the privacy. You’re not out on a beach with potential onlookers. So if you’re shy about nude or undies-only images, a studio session might be a good choice.

02. In-Home Maternity Session

Home sweet home! It’s the perfect backdrop for your maternity session. I find this is especially true when you have older children involved in your session. You can get ready at your own pace, in the comfort of your own home.

And comfort IS KEY when planning an in-home maternity session. Choose clothes that you, your partner, and your older children are comfortable in. If you want to do a breakfast photoshoot where everyone stays in their pj’s - yessss, please! Or if you want to throw on a comfortable dress while the kids run around free and barefoot in the backyard, that is beautiful too.

Overalls, comfy sweaters, flowy & floral dresses, a simple tank top with undies/maternity jeans…whatever is authentic, chill, and fun for your family…go with that!

03. Beach Maternity Session

There are so many beautiful beaches around Auckland (and New Zealand as a whole). It’s a stunning backdrop for your maternity photoshoot! It’s also a great way to get the kids out and have some fun, especially in the summer months.

Make sure you choose outfits that you and your family can run and explore in. The beach lends itself to lots of walking/climbing/splashing so (again) - comfort is key here!

At the beach, you can’t go wrong with a beautiful flowy dress, some linen pants & a t-shirt, a bodycon knit dress, or your bathing suit. You could even choose a few options to give your gallery a bit more variety…and just in case the kids decide they want to splash you ;)

I hope these tips have helped you refocus your energy while preparing for a maternity photoshoot in New Zealand. It’s not about what you’re wearing or making sure everybody’s hair is perfect. It’s about the connection and love between you and your family. That’s what’s important.

If you need someone to take maternity photos of you and the ones you love most on film, get in touch!
